The kobold says “Gladly, friend!” He and his family get busy making the horses and the mule comfortable places to lay down by collecting papers from around the room. They stop only to eat ravenously when you provide them with some food. The female kobold insists on negotiating a price with you, as she seems to be suspicious of her mate, who indicates he’d be glad to care for the animals for free! You settle on 1 gp now, and the promise of 1 gp per day (which is a fortune for the Kobolds but a low price for you). You leave enough rations for their family to eat for 7 days, with food for the animals too. The male kobold insists that he knows where fresh water is nearby, in the old palace kitchen, two doors further down the hallway. He will make sure to keep the animals well fed, watered, and rested until you return. With some comfort in Krislee’s Charm Person spell, and the gift of food and promise of more gold will keep the kobolds on your side, you carefully exit the room and head back to the portcullis. There you see a grisly sight. A dead goblin lies on the floor, black blood splattered everywhere, where the portcullis evidently came crashing down on him, impaling him and killing him quickly. Glancing down the big hallway, you see it is still bright daylight outside (it’s noon), so the goblins that left their dead behind likely didn’t go outdoors. They must have lifted one of the other portcullises and left by the corridor beyond. Anxious to validate the kobold’s story that there is fresh water nearby, you return down the corridor pausing at the next door beyond where the kobolds and your animals reside. The door to your left (east) appears to be barely hanging on to the hinges. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice. (edited)

You open the door and look inside. This looks like it was a store room. There are rotten bags of grain, old brooms, and 3 beer barrels under a shelf. The grain bags are so rotten that they are open, and grain has poured out all over the floor. The beer barrels look like they are leaking, the wood rotting away. There is a strong stench of vinegar and rotting food. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

You close the store room door and continue on down the hallway to the next door. You open the door to look inside, the room is too long to see it all with your lamp and torch light. What you can see leads you to believe that this is the kitchen the kobold was talking about. There are many wooden trenchers, spoons, and knives scattered about the tables and floors. A pile of grease rags lies in the southwest corner of the room near a keg of dried beans. Pots and other assorted dishes and cooking utensils are also lying strewn about the room. I forgot to award XP after the kobold encounter. Everyone receives 100 XP for successful negotiation and a win-win for both parties. As you move further into the kitchen, your light reveals the rest of the room. On the east wall is a fireplace, and in the northeast corner is a small water fountain, from a natural spring. It drains back into the mountain through a small hole in the catch basin. There are three tubs full of water nearby, one of which is full of a green, smelly fungus. As you all search, nothing of real value is found. All of the kitchen implements seem to be beyond cleaning or repair. However, as Krislee is searching in the pile of grease rags, she disturbs a 3 foot long grayish-white snake that was sleeping in the pile. It rises up and you can see that it is a cobra. It spits venom at Krislee, barely missing her face! Next Step: Describe how you will proceed. If attacking, roll .combat and your .”weapon” damage dice. If not (evading), then roll .turn dice.

Hagar steps outside the door, as described. 😏 Krislee rolls her eyes, and casually swings her sword at the Spitting Cobra, taking off its head (hit it for 8 hp, it only had 3!), and depriving the rest of the party of the chance to fight. You move back into the hallway, walking south to the next door. The hallway continues south beyond the door. You enter the room. This room seems to be larger than the kitchen, you are not able to see the whole room with your lamplight unless you explore further in. At first it is hard to determine what this room was use for, but after careful observation, it becomes apparent that it once was a dining hall, but now is a complete wreck. Tables, benches and stools have been smashed into hundreds of pieces, torch sconces have been ripped out of the walls, graffiti covers one wall and garbage is piled about the room in small, stinking heaps. The remains of several fires can be seen near the center of the room. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

Krislee searches the furthest into the room, into the south east corner. She finds nothing of note. Weert, searching in the north east corner of the room, finds a wand lying on the floor amidst the bits of wood. He is unsure what it does, it will require 1d4 turns of uninterrupted inspection to determine its nature. Wirlt, searching in the remains of a fire in the center of the room, finds a ring of what looks like jailers' keys, there are 6 keys, each look very similar. Chase, looking carefully under the largest overturned table from a distance, notices what looks like a large many-legged worm, about 9 feet long, with many tentacles around its mouth. It is a Carrion Crawler, but it is not attacking. It is watching Chase with interest. Hagar is happy to hang out by the door. Next Step: Describe how you will proceed. If attacking, roll .combat and your .”weapon” damage dice. If not attacking, then roll .turn dice.

Chase steps in toward the Carrion Crawler, and with a single massive swing, decapitates it! (hit it for 8 hp). The others (except Hagar) run up too late to help out. Suspicious that it was so easy to dispatch, and ignoring the stench of the beast, Chase looks more closely at it. “It was already wounded pretty badly” he tells the others. He pulls a broken sword out of its side, where it had been impaled, the wound festering. Looking closely at the sword, you see that it has a unique insignia on the pommel. It resembles a wolf’s head with a battlement and ball between the ears, two slanted eyes, an arrow where the nose should be, and a lightning bolt on the arrow. Chase did all the work, he receives 75 XP Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

None of you recognize the insignia. You are far from home, so you may not be as familiar as locals would be. In the interest of moving the story along, I will not roll for 4 of you and I'm going to assume you are finished with this room and are moving further into the dungeon. I'm also assuming that Weert will study the wand at a later point, and Wirlt will hold onto the keyring for now. You leave the room and travel further down the hallway, which ends in a "T" junction. To the east there is a narrow archway at the edge of your lamplight, 30 feet from you. You are not able to see beyond the arch. To the west is a door in the west wall where the hallway turns around a corner back to the north. Next Step: Decide whether to go through the archway, the doorway, or turn the corner to follow the hallway to the north. No need to roll .turn dice this time, just give your vote and I'll take the majority decision and move the adventure along.

Through the door, there is a short landing, then a stairway down. As you follow the stairway down, you see another landing, followed by stairs going down even further.

Following the steps to the bottom, you see that the finished stone walls and floor end abruptly at a natural cavern in the rock of the mountain. Moving into the large cavernous room, you see a 20 foot wide passage continues to the north. On a raised platform along the western wall of the cavern is a beautifully carved statue of a woman holding a small girl child in her lap. The woman is smiling down at the child, who plays with a small ball clutched in her hands. The inscription on the base of the statue reads “The secret treasure of one’s heart can be found in love”.

Chase searches but finds nothing of note. He ends up back at the stairs, after suggesting to the group that they return up the stairs. Krislee examines the statue but finds nothing of interest. Weert searches the room and finds nothing. He ends up at the wide corridor to the north. Looking down it, he sees nothing of note, it extends beyond the edge of his torchlight. Hagar searches the room finding nothing. Once at the statue though, he finds a small coin-size slot in the base of the statue, just below the inscription. He calls Wirlt over and asks her to check it for traps, in case it is a keyhole. Wirlt examines the slot, and determines that it is meant for a coin-like object to be inserted. She searches, but is confident that there are no traps. She then is able to pick the lock successfully, which opens a compartment in the statue base. Inside is a scroll case, and in it is a fragment of a verse written in silver ink on vellum parchment: “I came, and what did my eyes behold? A maiden fair with hair of gold. Her face, aglow by which the sun is shamed. My steed, a dragon, her innocence did tame. Her heart, a gem with many facets,” Next Step: Describe how you will proceed and then roll .turn dice.

Hagar says “ let’s hope the steed in the poem is a euphemism for the author’s libido and not a reference to a real dragon, as I’m not in the mood for a treasure hoarding wyrm today.” With that Hagar marches back towards the ladder and says “ let’s head back up and explore the hallway to the north.”

You return up the two flights of stairs and travel north in the corridor, stopping at the door in the west wall that you had seen earlier. The corridor continues north, down a flight of stairs, which you can't see beyond.

Wirlt listens at the door, but hears nothing. You proceed into the room. Many dusty, musty, bedrolls provide the furniture for this room that was once a barracks. Six chests are against the west wall and are covered in several inches of dust. Outlines of weapons and shields can be seen on the wall indicating that at one time the walls sported the occupant's tools of the trade as decorations for the otherwise barren room. I just realized that it might not be obvious from the map image unless you look closely, but there is another door out of this room in the northwest corner.
